My first encounter with Ukrainian cuisine was at a Howard Johnson’s restaurant in Chicago – of all places! I was a junior in high school, my family had just moved to the “Windy City,” and I’d started my after-school job as a waitress at HoJo’s.

We’re inveterate shoulder-season travelers, which for us means that at some point in the autumn, we’re on the road – sometimes in the US, sometimes overseas. Last year’s trip was a month-long fall fling in the Balkans.
We love wandering around Europe, particularly the regions less visited. So the past few years we’ve focused on traveling throughout Eastern Europe, the Baltic States, and the Balkans.
Autumn is one of our favorite times to visit Europe, and this week we’re heading out again. We plan to visit 3 new (to us) countries: Ukraine, Poland, and Slovakia, and to return to Hungary and Austria.
