“Sugar Plum” is such a cool word. How many children have gone to sleep on Christmas eve with “visions of sugar-plums” dancing in their heads, dreaming of stockings filled with candy?

It’s nearly Christmas Eve – my favorite day of the year. The wonderful combination of childhood anticipation of things to come, paired with the adult relief of a few days off, is total bliss. Around our house it’s time for old movies, sing-along music, and special foods.
We live on a small island. Not much escapes us. But when a casual conversation with new friends at our local Starbucks turned from computer hacking to Christmas decorating, my ears pricked up.
At this time of year, everyone is patiently awaiting the Christmas and New Year’s Holiday – for whatever that means; time off work, family parties, travel, or just some stress-free relaxation.
The piles of wrapping paper are history, the leftovers are disappearing, and pine needles are collecting in open gift boxes under the tree. It’s Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, and for those still on holiday, it’s prime time for goofin’ off.
We love the holidays. In our home it’s time for special foods – both old and new – but all from our families. On Christmas Eve we’ll enjoy the tradition of my Mom’s Mushroom Meatballs and Black Walnut Cake from James’ sister Brenda. Our Christmas ham will be baked to James’ brother John’s recipe, …
