I Say Gaudi …You Say Gaudy

No discussion of Barcelona would be complete without a little time for Antoni Gaudi. He was one of the founders of the Modernista movement, and many in the world call him a genius.

I’m no architect, but I can say that his buildings are certainly fun and incredibly whimsical.

He designed churches, palaces, houses, and apartment buildings, most of which are in Barcelona. They were built in the late 1880s to the early 1900s. To my eye they are Dr. Seuss meets Alice in Wonderland. If I didn’t know he was a religious man I would wonder what he was smoking.

I have posted some of his more famous designs. Probably his most famous is the Sagrada Familia (Sacred Family) Church. The other photos are Casa Battlo, a rich business man’s mansion, and the Casa Mila, which is an apartment building with a twenty year waiting list. You have to admit that his designs are different and way ahead of their time.

Happy Trails,
