There are few places in the world more colorful and photogenic than the Wat Pho in Bangkok, Thailand. This large compound is home to the famous Reclining Buddha, and there are over 1,000 golden statues of the Buddha throughout the complex.
This photo accentuates the artistry of the Buddha as well as the building, and similar sculptures abound in this world-famous landmark. It also provides a good view of some seriously large ears. We asked about this and got a couple of answers. The more fanciful of the two is that in Eastern cultures, large ears are associated with wisdom, because they’re big enough to listen well. On the practical side, princes of the day wore lots of heavy gold jewelry, and over time, the heavy weight just stretched the earlobes. I suspect, if you’re a Buddhist, the first explanation is the best.
Happy Trails,
James
