Meet Penny. At least that’s what we’ve been calling him ever since we arrived in St. Simons Island. We pass him nearly every day, and finally decided to check him out up close and personal. It seems that everywhere we travel has its memorable dogs, and SSI is no exception.
James pulled into the sandy lot, and I jumped out with the camera, yelling back, “He’s totally covered in pennies! Totally … if you know what I mean.”
It turns out that Penny has a purpose. Lexington has its “Horse Mania,” Chicago has its “Cows on Parade,” and now St. Simons Island has its “Coastal Dawgs Unleashed.”
The public art fundraiser is the brainchild of the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia, the area’s only 100% donor funded no-kill animal adoption center. Penny was created by local artist Sandy Schoettle and he’s sponsored by Phyllis and AJ Braswell.
And you sports fans will probably also note that the bulldog is the official mascot of the University of Georgia. Me, I’m a UK Wildcat fan, but I’m glad to see this bulldawg put to a good purpose and earning his keep.
Just like the Tree Spirits of St. Simons Island, the Bulldawgs are scattered around the island and we’re still looking for the rest of the pack.
