Yesterday we spent the day mountain-goating the pathways that cling to the cliffs of Fira. These serpentine trails worm their way past shops, bars, restaurants and houses, keeping you perched precariously on the edge of the volcanic crater.
The houses are tightly stacked, stair-stepping their way up the steep sides of the rock. Most are whitewashed, so their most distinctive architectural feature is their front door. Their stunning simplicity is breath taking. And because lumber has always been scarce on this volcanic island, front doors are also one of the most expensive architectural elements of any home. We thought you would like a taste of Santorini doorways. Enjoy!
Peace and Love,
